Skarta Energy Oy, part of SkartaNYAB, which implements clean energy solutions, and Tohmajärvi municipality are planning solar and wind farms in Tohmajärvi. For this purpose, the company and the municipality have entered into a letter of intent through which the possibilities of building renewable energy in Tohmajärvi are mapped. Through the mapping, the construction of several solar and wind farms and areas suitable for their construction are investigated. The combined power of the parks is to be 60 MW, and if the project is implemented, this will be the largest energy project in the whole of eastern Finland.
"The energy produced with the help of solar power and wind power is completely renewable and together these forms of energy support each other perfectly. The planned project also utilizes Skarta's Vierivoima® solutions, which strengthen access to clean energy at a competitive price in the region. The solution also enables a rapid transition to the use of hydrogen in the Tohmajärvi area when the need arises," says Vikke Saarelainen, deputy managing director of Skarta Energy Oy.
"In Tohmajärvi, we have already taken ambitious measures for carbon neutrality, and the collaboration with Skarta is a continuation of this. We expect the energy project to attract industrial players to the area, strengthen the area's self-sufficiency in terms of energy and promote Tohmajärvi's transition to carbon neutrality. If the project is carried out, it will also have employment effects for the region," says Tohmajärvi's municipal director Mikko Löppönen.
Vitality in Eastern Finland
Eastern Finland has had challenges regarding the construction of wind power. Radar facilities used by the Border Guard limit the planning of wind power in the area. At the same time, the development of the existing electricity transmission network is being slowed down, which currently does not enable full utilization of the solar and wind power potential in the area.
According to a recent study from LUT University, the electricity produced in eastern and southeastern Finland would be the key to significant growth for industry in the area.
Skarta Energy believes that eastern Finland needs tailor-made, local energy solutions.
"We believe we have a solution for Eastern Finland. With the help of Vierivoima and other projects that produce renewable energy, we can contribute our own energy for the whole of eastern Finland. Thereby, regional differences between eastern and western Finland are evened out. The transition to carbon neutrality is happening locally, one region and one city at a time," summarizes Saarelainen.
The mapping of the areas has started in Tohmajärvi. For the first phase of the overall project, funding has been applied to the Ministry of Labor and Enterprise. A positive decision makes it possible to quickly implement the first phase even within the next two years.
“We are proud to sign this letter of intent. It enables us to contribute to building a cleaner future and society and further strengthen our renewable energy project development portfolio", summarizes Kari Tuominen, Managing Director, Skarta Energy Oy.
